Midlands Black Rhino Conservancy hosts awareness marathon

The Midlands Black Rhino Conservancy, in partnership with the Kwekwe Runners Club, will this Sunday, September 21, host an awareness marathon as part of efforts to protect the endangered black rhino species.

The marathon, which will start at Muwandi Shopping Centre and end at the conservancy along the Mvuma-Kwekwe road, is being held ahead of World Rhino Day commemorations on September 22. It will run under the theme “Run the Mile, Save the Rhino,” in line with the global theme “Rhino Revolution.”

The event’s spokesperson Michael Magoronga said more than 200 athletes are expected to participate in the event.

“The marathon is not just about running but about raising awareness against rhino poaching. As you might be aware, the Midlands Black Rhino Conservancy is one of the remaining sanctuaries for this endangered species, and we are committed to protecting it,” Magoronga said.

He said the marathon would provide an opportunity to highlight the devastating consequences of poaching and to mobilize communities to join the conservation drive.

“We are saying no to rhino poaching, and we want to use sport as a platform to spread that message,” Magoronga added.

The conservancy has over the years spearheaded various initiatives to raise awareness on wildlife conservation and to protect the dwindling population of black rhinos in Zimbabwe.
