Redcliff Council pursues recovery of US$15 million Zisco water debt

The Municipality of Redcliff says efforts are continuing to recover more than US$15 million owed by the defunct Ziscosteel Company in unpaid water bills.

Speaking to journalists soon after a full council meeting, Municipality of Redcliff Acting Town Clerk Nyararai Gomba said council was still engaging Ziscosteel management and exploring possible strategies to recover the debt.

“It is still work in progress. We are still trying to engage the management of Zisco and come up with other strategies on how we can collect the money,” said Gomba.

“But as of now, we have not done anything.”

Gomba said the outstanding debt was in excess of US$15 million, although he did not provide details on the period over which the arrears accumulated.

The debt has remained one of the major financial concerns for the local authority, which has in recent years faced challenges in revenue collection and service delivery.

Ziscosteel, once Zimbabwe’s largest integrated steel producer and the economic backbone of Redcliff, ceased operations years ago following financial and operational difficulties.

Council officials say recovery of the outstanding amount could significantly improve the municipality’s capacity to deliver essential services to residents.
