Kwekwe Polytechnic principal Evans Musara has urged students to shun drug and substance abuse, warning that the practice threatens their future and destroys the potential of young people.

Musara said drug and substance abuse was undermining the prospects of young people, including those with the potential to become successful entrepreneurs.

He made the remarks in a speech read on his behalf by the college’s vice-principal, Chamusingarevi Gora, during the institution’s 15th Applied Arts Graduation Ceremony held at the college.

“Drug and substance abuse robs us of a bright future and devastates the lives of brilliant minds and promising entrepreneurs,” he said.

Musara urged young people who had not yet engaged in drug and substance abuse to stay away from the practice, warning that its consequences could derail their ambitions.

He said the college had also taken steps to educate its student leadership on appropriate conduct, including the dangers of drug and substance abuse.

Musara said the college had invited officers from the Zimbabwe Republic Police to address student leaders on the subject during a training programme held in Masvingo.

He recounted a warning delivered by a police chaplain during the training, highlighting the potentially devastating consequences of drug use.

“Those who have not yet engaged in drugs must abstain. Please don’t engage in drug and substance abuse. They will destroy your future,” he said.

Musara’s remarks come amid growing concerns over drug and substance abuse among young people, with calls for educational institutions and other stakeholders to strengthen awareness and prevention programmes.
