The 2026 Zimbabwe Premier Volleyball League (ZPVL) season gets underway this weekend with teams set to compete in regional round robin matches in Harare and Bulawayo.

ZPVL chairperson Rudo Charuma said the opening fixtures mark the official start of the league season and will play a key role in determining standings ahead of the knockout stages.

“The upcoming two-day ZPVL matches in Harare and Bulawayo mark the official start of the 2026 league season. This is not a playoff qualifier, but a crucial part of the round robin phase,” said Charuma.

“All teams will compete in this initial stage to earn points and determine standings. The top teams at the end of the round robin will then advance to the quarterfinals.”

Matches in Harare will be hosted at the University of Zimbabwe, where eight men’s teams and eight women’s teams are expected to compete.

The Southern Region matches will be played at Hillside Teachers College, featuring six men’s teams and three women’s teams.

Charuma said the league’s round robin format was designed to ensure fair competition and provide teams with an opportunity to accumulate points before the knockout stage.

“These matches set the tone for the season, offering early insights into team strength, strategy and form. Fans can expect intense competition as clubs begin their journey toward the knockout stage,” she said.

According to Charuma, all matches in both regions will be played under the same rules and officiating standards as outlined in the ZPVL 2026 competition guidelines.

“To ensure fairness and accuracy, official statisticians have been deployed from the start of the season, supporting not only real-time decision making but also individual player accolades and future national team selections,” she said.

The Zimbabwe Volleyball Association has also appointed a referees commission to oversee officiating across the two regions.

The commission is led by ZVA second vice-president Mollet Mathema and chaired by international referee Spencer Chitate.

Charuma said the league management expected teams to maintain discipline and adhere to competition regulations throughout the season.

“Qualification for the quarterfinals will be determined by total points earned during the round robin phase. Fair play, consistency and sportsmanship will define the spirit of the competition,” she said.

The top four teams at the end of the season will automatically qualify for the Zone VI Club Championships.

Among the fixtures expected to attract attention in Harare are UZ Wolves vs Black Mambas or D Knights vs St Collins with new teams like D Knights and Thunders making their mark, every match is a chance to see fresh talent clash with established squads.

In the women’s league, Raven Claw vs CUT and UZ vs Black Mambas promise high intensity, while Harare City vs UZ Wolves could shape early standings.

While thrilling action matches in the southern leg heats up with Crocs vs Chimoio and Rebels vs Shalom all teams fighting to prove their dominance.

With Gwanda Spikers, GZU Elders, and Rebels in action, the men’s fixtures are packed with energy.
