Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) Central Region regional manager Joseph Dube has called for greater community participation in rhino conservation amid threats posed by poaching and habitat loss.
Speaking during the Midlands Black Rhino Conservancy Half Marathon in Kwekwe, Dube said the event provided an opportunity to raise awareness and mobilise support for rhino conservation.
Dube thanked organisers, runners, sponsors and conservation partners for supporting the fundraising event.
“Rhinos are under severe threat from poaching and habitat loss,” Dube said.
He said proceeds from the marathon would contribute towards conservation initiatives, including anti-poaching efforts as well as community and education programmes.
“By running, walking, sponsoring and donating, you are helping protect them, support anti-poaching efforts and fund vital community and education programmes,” he said.
Dube said rhino conservation required the involvement of communities, businesses, conservation organisations and other stakeholders.
He also commended volunteers, sponsors, donors, local authorities, security teams and medical personnel for contributing to the successful hosting of the event.
Dube said the marathon was not only about raising funds but also about increasing public awareness of the need to protect rhinos.
“Together, we have shown that when a community unites around a cause, we can run not just for ourselves but for a future where rhinos continue to thrive,” he said.
The Midlands Black Rhino Conservancy Half Marathon brought together 200 runners from across the country, families, businesses and conservation stakeholders in support of rhino conservation.
