The family of the late Vice President Simon Vengai Muzenda says it is using the annual Simon Muzenda Golf Tournament to raise funds for education and charitable initiatives in Masvingo.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Simon Muzenda 10th Anniversary Golf Tournament at Kwekwe Golf Club today (Saturday), Muzenda’s grandson, Simon Muzenda, said the family had adopted Bosco Primary School in Masvingo Province and was supporting an old people’s home in the province.
He said proceeds raised through the golf tournament were being channelled towards the initiatives, with the family also responding to specific needs at the old people’s home.
“The importance of this event is that we are honouring the legacy of the late Vice President Simon Muzenda. What we are aiming to do as a family is to develop and to contribute as best as we can,” Muzenda said.
“We have adopted a school in Masvingo Province, Bosco Primary, which we are supporting with the golf event. We have also adopted and support the old people’s home in Masvingo, which we donate to regularly and whenever they have needs.”
Muzenda said the tournament also provided an opportunity for the family to engage golfers and the business community and mobilise resources for its community programmes.
He said the family wanted the event to showcase its charitable work while also creating an opportunity for people to celebrate the life of the late Vice President.
“It’s very critical to let our partners know what we are doing as a family and to then also just have fun. My uncle loved telling stories and we just thought this was another way to do something different as a family, to honour his legacy, his time and his contribution to the development of the country,” he said.
Muzenda said the tournament was initially intended to rotate among different provinces, with Harare hosting one of the early editions before the event moved to Midlands.
He said the family had returned to Midlands for the third time following support from provincial authorities and other stakeholders.
“When we started off, the initial plan was we would move throughout the provinces. We had one in Harare, and then the next one was Midlands Province,” he said.
“However, thanks to the support and the love we are getting from the minister (Owen Ncube) and the ruling party leadership here, I think this is now our third event here. We have seen overwhelming support and contribution that they have done.”
Muzenda said the family was grateful for the continued support from stakeholders in Midlands, adding that the tournament had become an important platform for advancing the family’s community initiatives.
The Simon Muzenda Golf Tournament is held in memory of the late Vice President, who died in 2003, and has evolved into an annual sporting and fundraising event.
The 2026 tournament marks its 10th anniversary and is being held at Kwekwe Golf Club.
