Former Mbizo legislator Vongaishe Mupereri has urged young people to desist from drug and substance abuse, saying the country’s future depends on disciplined and focused youths.

Mupereri made the remarks during his 52nd birthday celebrations held at Mbizo Stadium in Kwekwe today (Friday).

Addressing residents, school children and invited guests, Mupereri said the event had been organised mainly to raise awareness on the dangers of drug and substance abuse among young people.

“The major purpose of this event is to educate the youth to desist from drug and substance abuse as they are the leaders of tomorrow,” said Mupereri.

“They must have sharp brains without the influence of intoxicating substances who can lead a nation.”

Mupereri commended school children who participated in a procession from Mbizo 4 to Mbizo Stadium ahead of the celebrations, saying their conduct demonstrated discipline and commitment to positive living.

“I was impressed by the school children who led a procession from Mbizo 4 up to Mbizo Stadium,” he said.

The former legislator also announced plans to sponsor an educational trip for Grade 7, Form Four and Upper Six students from schools in Mbizo.

“As such, I am inviting headmasters of schools in Mbizo to come and see me so that I can send all Grade 7s, Form 4 and Upper Six students for an educational trip,” said Mupereri.

“I don’t want to hear that parents have been forced to pay fees for the trip since I will meet all the expenses.”

He said the initiative was meant to encourage learners to remain focused on education and avoid drugs and other harmful activities.

“You have shown me that you are not involved in drug and substance abuse,” he told the pupils.

Mupereri said school heads interested in the programme should coordinate through party structures so arrangements for the trip could be made.

The celebrations were marked with sports and arts festival with winners receiving prizes.
