Kwekwe United secured a 2-0 victory over Grain Tigers in a ZIFA Central Region Division One Soccer League local derby played at Baghdad Stadium today (Saturday).
Johannes Sibanda and Babadi Tshikamba scored the goals that earned Kwekwe United maximum points in a closely contested encounter.
Speaking after the match, Kwekwe United head coach Tendai Chikuni described the fixture as difficult, saying the intensity of the league was increasing as the first round nears its end.
“The games are becoming more competitive as we approach the second round,” said Chikuni. “We knew our opponents well and today’s goals came from executing our game plan. I am pleased that the players followed our tactical approach.”
Chikuni said the club intends to strengthen its squad during the transfer window.
“We have identified areas that need reinforcement and we are looking at bringing in about five players. We believe that will strengthen us for the second round,” he said.
Grain Tigers head coach Kudzai Mhandire said his side was disappointed with the result but credited Kwekwe United’s experience.
“I think experience made the difference today. They have experienced players who knew what to do at key moments despite us dominating possession,” said Mhandire.
He, however, expressed satisfaction with his team’s overall performance.
“We created several chances and moved the ball well. Our transitions were good, but we lacked the finishing touch,” he said.
The victory gives Kwekwe United three valuable points as the ZIFA Central Region Division One Soccer League heads towards the halfway stage of the season.
