Kwekwe Polytechnic has donated goods valued at more than US$2 500 to Kwekwe General Hospital after adopting the institution’s male ward, in a move the college says is part of its community engagement mandate.

The donation, sourced by students and staff, includes two television sets, two open-view decoders and two blood pressure testing machines, as well as bedding, kitchenware and other essential supplies.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Acting Principal Chamusingarevi Gora said the initiative reflects the institution’s commitment to contributing to the welfare of communities under the heritage-based Education 5.0 philosophy.

“Kwekwe Polytechnic is today making a donation of several essential items to Kwekwe General Hospital, specifically for the male ward that was adopted by the college,” Gora said.

“This initiative resonates with the expectations of the heritage-based Education 5.0 philosophy, which requires institutions of tertiary learning to deepen community engagement and contribute to the well-being of the communities that host them.”

Gora said the polytechnic would continue to play an active role in addressing challenges affecting the local community.

“Through this support, we reaffirm our commitment to service, solidarity and shared responsibility in improving health and living conditions in our community,” he said.

Items handed over include 83 pairs of bed sheets, 75 pillows, 60 pillowcases, 10 chairs, kitchen utensils and assorted dining ware, among others.

Gora said the donation was the result of a collective effort by staff and students, commending their “dedication, teamwork and generosity” in supporting the hospital.

Receiving the donation, Acting Kwekwe General Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Bruce Mhondiwa said the items would assist in improving patient care.

“This is going to aid in the management in supporting our patients here at Kwekwe General Hospital,” he said.

Mhondiwa pledged that the hospital would safeguard the donated goods for the benefit of patients.

“We are going to safekeep these things for the betterment of our patients,” he said, expressing gratitude to the institution for the support.

The adoption of the male ward by Kwekwe Polytechnic is part of ongoing efforts by tertiary institutions to partner with public institutions in addressing resource gaps and improving service delivery.
