Investor influx drives industrial growth in Kwekwe district

Kwekwe District has recorded a rise in investor interest, with several large-scale projects underway, as authorities push to meet national development targets under the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2).

District Development Coordinator Fortune Mpungu said the district is making “tremendous progress” towards achieving Vision 2030, citing increased investment activity across key sectors of the local economy.

“We have seen an influx of investors in the district, particularly within Kwekwe City,” Mpungu said in an interview.

He highlighted the establishment of the Global Union Ferrochrome Plant, which has begun production and created employment opportunities.

“As I speak, they have already employed 180 people and we are happy about that,” Mpungu said.

Mpungu also confirmed that discussions are underway with a prospective investor, Ming Chang, which is seeking to develop an industrial park in the Sherwood area.

“We are currently engaging our communities to avail land for that project, which is valued at about US$3 billion,” he said.

In addition, a solar power project in Sherwood is nearing completion. Mpungu said the plant, developed under the Public Service Commission, is about 80 percent complete and is expected to create jobs once operational.

He said investment activity is being recorded across multiple sectors, including mining and local authority-led initiatives, contributing to broader economic development in the district.

“Our local authorities are also investing within their jurisdictions, while the mining sector continues to expand,” Mpungu said.

He attributed the growth in investor interest to policies aimed at improving the ease of doing business, which he said are helping to attract capital into the district.

Mpungu expressed optimism that Kwekwe could be among the first districts to attain upper middle-income status in line with national development goals.

However, he did not provide timelines for the completion of some of the proposed projects, including the planned industrial park.
