Zibagwe Rural District Council (ZRDC) Chief Executive Officer Mr Farayi Desimond Machaya has welcomed the gazetting of a minimum service delivery standards framework for local authorities, describing it as a major step towards improving accountability and consistency in public service delivery.
Speaking during a full council meeting, Machaya said the framework, which has been gazetted by government, sets uniform standards for the provision of essential services by local authorities and provides a benchmark for measuring performance and citizen satisfaction.
“The gazetting of the minimum service delivery standards framework is a key development in promoting transparency, accountability and consistency in public service delivery,” Machaya said.
He explained that the framework covers critical service areas, including water supply, sanitation, solid waste management, roads, public health, environmental management and housing.
Machaya said adherence to the standards would help local authorities to curb erratic spending while ensuring residents receive consistent and reliable services.
He added that the framework would also enhance monitoring and evaluation of council performance, enabling authorities to identify service delivery gaps and take corrective measures in line with national expectations.
The minimum service delivery standards are expected to guide local authorities in planning, budgeting and implementing service delivery programmes across districts.
