Kwekwe Ward 12 Cllr Thomas Mahapa has donated food and basic supplies to a 75-year-old woman living with blindness, as part of a programme targeting vulnerable residents in the area.
Gogo Sipo Dzutu, who lost her sight three years ago, received a food hamper and toiletries from the councillor during a visit to her home recently.
Speaking after receiving the donation, Dzutu said she had been struggling to meet basic needs.
“I thought the world had forgotten me,” she said.
Dzutu said her condition deteriorated after she failed to consistently access medication for chronic illnesses, including hypertension and diabetes. She now relies on assistance from a young neighbour for daily activities.
Cllr Mahapa said the donation was part of a ward-level initiative to identify and support vulnerable households, particularly elderly residents.
“We are identifying underprivileged people in Ward 12, with a focus on senior citizens,” he said. “This is part of our responsibility to ensure that vulnerable members of the community receive support.”
The hamper included mealie-meal, rice, sugar, cooking oil, beans, soya chunks and basic toiletries.
Mahapa also addressed concerns raised by Dzutu regarding individuals who allegedly attempted to pressure her into selling her house, claiming she owed outstanding council bills.
“We have engaged the housing department and confirmed that while there are arrears, there is no process underway to repossess the property,” he said. “Any cases of intimidation or fraud should be reported to the police.”
He added that his office would assist Dzutu in applying for social welfare support and inclusion on the council’s vulnerable persons register.
According to Mahapa, several elderly residents in Ward 12 have been identified as living alone or under difficult conditions.
He said efforts are underway to mobilise local organisations and community groups to provide assistance.
A social welfare official, who declined to be named, said community-level interventions can help bridge delays often experienced in accessing formal assistance.
Dzutu said she hopes for continued support and security in her home.
“I just want peace and to know my home is safe,” she said.
Cllr Mahapa said his office plans to follow up on Dzutu’s case and facilitate further assistance through relevant departments.
