City of Kwekwe Ward 12 Councillor Thomas Mahapa has urged residents to report vicious dogs to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) so they can be impounded.
Speaking during a full council meeting this week, Cllr Mahapa said there has been a rise in dog bite cases, with some dogs reportedly jumping over perimeter walls to attack neighbours.
“Last week I complained about a dog that scaled the fence and bit a neighbour. Just yesterday, the same dog bit another person and I was advised to report such dogs to the SPCA,” said Mahapa. “Let’s report vicious dogs to the SPCA so that they can be impounded.”
Ward 8 Councillor Edumakomborero Mlambo added that council workers must differentiate between stray dogs and those kept within people’s yards.
“Council workers must not shoot and kill dogs found in yards but target stray dogs,” he said.
Health Services Committee chairperson, Ward 11 Councillor Panyika Nyika, stressed that the ongoing municipal exercise was not targeting domestic dogs.
“So far, we have no reports of dogs shot dead in yards. Our focus is on stray dogs that have become a nuisance,” Nyika said.
Kwekwe City Council recently embarked on a programme to shoot stray dogs on sight, citing health and safety concerns in residential areas.
