Zibagwe Rural District Council (RDC) junior council chairperson Arthur Matashu has urged students to avoid drug and substance abuse, warning that it threatens their future and the nation’s development.

Speaking during the Heroes and Defence Forces commemorations held at Rio Tinto Zhombe High School on Monday, Matashu said the youth are the leaders of tomorrow and must be guided by the values of patriotism, unity, and resilience embodied by Zimbabwe’s liberation heroes.

“To the youth of Zimbabwe, your potential is limitless. However, we face challenges that threaten your well-being and future. Avoid the dangers of drug and substance abuse which can derail your dreams,” Matashu said.

He encouraged students to seek help if they are struggling with addiction and to surround themselves with positive influences. He also called for the eradication of child marriages, saying every child deserves an education, opportunities and a safe childhood.

“Let us protect our girls and boys from early marriages, ensuring they thrive and reach their full potential,” he added.

Matashu paid tribute to the country’s national heroes, including Joshua Nkomo, Herbert Chitepo, and Josiah Tongogara, saying their bravery and sacrifice paved the way for Zimbabwe’s independence.

“As we commemorate this day, we reaffirm our commitment to upholding the values of our heroes. Let us draw inspiration from their sacrifices and work towards a more prosperous and united Zimbabwe,” he said.

The commemorations brought together community members, students, and local leaders, who observed a moment of reflection on the nation’s history and reaffirmed their commitment to peace and development.
