Horticulture farmer Titus Mpondi (in black t/shirt) from Zhombe has been named this year’s first prize winner at the Kwekwe District Agricultural Show, held recently in Kwekwe.

Mpondi walked away with an auger – a fuel-powered hole digging machine for crop management and conservation agriculture – along with 25 kilogrammes of SeedCo maize seed, eight bags each of D Compound and Ammonium Nitrate fertilizers, and herbicides, all sponsored by SeedCo.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the event, Mpondi said the recognition was a boost to his farming work but highlighted that a shortage of inputs remained a major challenge on his seven plots.

“I also struggle with accessing markets because I do not have a vehicle to transport my produce to ready markets,” he said. “I need an additional borehole and water tank to improve water supply for irrigation.”

Mpondi, who left Harare to pursue full-time farming, produces a variety of horticultural crops in Zhombe.

The Kwekwe District Agricultural Show aims to promote excellence in farming and encourage innovation among local farmers.
