JT Academy Trust has launched a holiday training camp at Kwekwe Primary School, drawing dozens of young footballers for a programme that combines sport and life skills development.
The academy, owned by former Zimbabwe national team coach Jairos Tapera, reported a strong turnout at the start of the camp, with 45 players attending—surpassing the initial target of between 20 and 25 participants. Organisers said more players are expected to join after the Easter holiday.
Participants, drawn from the Under-13, Under-15 and Under-17 age groups, are undergoing structured football training sessions alongside lessons aimed at equipping them with life skills.
JT Academy administrator Veronica Guta Magwaza said the response from parents and guardians had been encouraging.
“We have seen a positive response from parents who want their children engaged in constructive activities during the school holidays,” she said. “The programme is designed not only to develop football skills, but also to promote discipline and positive behaviour.”
Training sessions are being conducted under the guidance of experienced coaches, including Tapera and other technical staff. The programme includes technical drills, tactical instruction and physical conditioning.
Tapera said the initiative is aimed at nurturing both talent and character.
“Our focus is on developing well-rounded players. Football is important, but so is instilling values such as teamwork, discipline and respect,” he said.
The camp runs on a structured schedule, with two daily training sessions complemented by life skills workshops covering topics such as goal-setting, time management and healthy living.
Organisers also indicated that participants may have opportunities to attend competitive matches, where possible, as part of their exposure to higher levels of the game.
The academy said it intends to continue expanding its programmes as it seeks to contribute to grassroots football development in Zimbabwe.
