Shurugwi FC chairman Godknows Maketo has completed the CAF D coaching course, saying the qualification is part of efforts to strengthen leadership and technical development at the club.
The CAF D course was held in Gweru, with more than 50 participants completing the training on May 11.
Maketo, who attended the course alongside members of the club’s coaching staff, said he was motivated by the need for football administrators and former players to acquire formal coaching qualifications.
“What motivated me to go for CAF D is that I want to be a leader who is equipped in terms of qualifications,” he said.
“I noted that most ex-footballers in Shurugwi have negligence in terms of equipping themselves with the required qualifications. It doesn’t make sense if you want to lead people without knowledge.”
He said he was encouraged that members of his technical team also enrolled for the course.
“I’m very happy because I didn’t do it by myself, but I motivated my coaches to have papers and they agreed to the idea. We did the course in the same class,” said Maketo.
According to Maketo, the knowledge gained from the course will be used to help identify and develop young football talent in Shurugwi.
“I am planning to use the skill by identifying young talents and integrating them, while also giving them confidence to pursue their careers,” he said.
Maketo said he intends to further his coaching education by enrolling for the CAF C licence next year.
He described the course as a valuable learning experience and said interacting with former footballers and coaches during the training had been beneficial.
Shurugwi FC officials said the qualification strengthens the club’s technical structure and reflects efforts to promote professionalism and youth development.
The club is currently competing in the Central Region Soccer League.
