The Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Owen Ncube has officially handed over a newly renovated Kwekwe District War Veterans Association office, describing the project as a milestone in honouring the country’s liberation war heroes.
Speaking at the ceremony on Saturday, Ncube said the office was refurbished at a cost of more than US$30,000 through a partnership between his office and a team of well-wishers.
The renovations included repairs to the roof and superstructure, installation of a new ceiling, tiling, bathroom fittings, shower and tub, office furniture, lounge suite, television set, refrigerator, stove, drawers, two sliding gates, painting, and the addition of a solar-powered borehole.
The facility also now boasts Wi-Fi connectivity, which Ncube said places it among the most modern war veterans’ offices in the country.
“This development resonates with the Second Republic’s infrastructure modernisation and urban renewal thrust,” he said. “It is also in line with the constitutional requirement for Zimbabweans to recognise war veterans’ institutions and to appreciate, through action, the selfless sacrifices of our gallant sons and daughters.”
Ncube said the donation was inspired by the leadership and liberation history of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, whom he described as a decorated freedom fighter trained in Tanzania, Egypt and China, and who took part in major sabotage missions during the liberation struggle.
The minister also reflected on his personal connections with several late and surviving liberation war veterans, praising them for their unwavering loyalty to the ruling ZANU–PF party and government programmes.
“I commend the veterans of the liberation struggle for their consistent, resilient and loyal support to the party’s ideology and policies,” Ncube said.
The event was attended by war veterans, government officials, and members of the Kwekwe community.
