Kwekwe district development coordinator Fortune Mpungu has challenged Redcliff Municipality to review the names of roads and institutions that still bear colonial-era names.
Addressing a Redcliff Municipality full council meeting, Mpungu urged the local authority’s relevant committee to consider renaming the roads and institutions as part of efforts to promote names that reflect Zimbabwe’s identity and history.
He said some colonial-era names were still being used for roads and institutions in the municipality.
“I’ve been observing, even in your discussions, you still have some colonial names to some of your institutions and some of your roads,” Mpungu said.
He challenged the relevant council committee to examine the names and make proposals for their replacement.
“I perhaps would request the relevant committee of council to look at those colonial names with a view to renaming them so that we get Zimbabwean names that speak to us,” he said.
Mpungu said the issue should be treated as a challenge for the responsible council committee to consider.
His call comes as Redcliff Municipality continues to engage residents on service delivery and other issues affecting the city.
