The Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Owen Ncube Owen Ncube has urged local authorities to strengthen service delivery and accountability.
Speaking during the handed over of 17 motorbikes to councillors and commissioning of a skip bin truck valued at more than ZWG 4 million he said the equipment, procured using the municipality’s internal revenue, should translate into improved efficiency in core services such as waste management, water supply and community engagement.
He said councillors play a key role in grassroots governance and must ensure the new resources enhance responsiveness to residents’ needs.
“Local authorities are expected to restore their credibility as primary drivers of essential service delivery by enforcing enhanced accountability, transparency and efficiency,” Ncube said.
The minister added that improved revenue collection and prudent use of funds were critical to sustaining service provision, urging residents and businesses to continue paying rates to support municipal operations.
Ncube said the initiative aligns with the government’s devolution agenda under President Emmerson Mnangagwa, which seeks to strengthen local governance and infrastructure development across provinces.
The City of Kwekwe said the motorbikes will improve councillors’ mobility in carrying out oversight and community liaison duties, while the skip bin truck is expected to boost refuse collection capacity.
The event forms part of ongoing efforts by authorities in the Midlands province to modernise local government operations and improve urban service delivery.
