The Midlands Province will host the MIDVA 1 Anti-Drug and Substance Abuse Volleyball Tournament this weekend, with organisers saying the event is aimed at promoting youth engagement through sport.
The tournament, scheduled for February 21–22, is supported by Deputy Minister of Finance David Mnangagwa, who has provided sponsorship that includes prizes, trophies and playing equipment.
According to Midlands Volleyball Association official Rudo Charuma, the initiative is designed to encourage positive activities among young people.
“The sponsorship towards MIDVA 1 aligns with efforts to promote youth development through sport,” Charuma said, adding that such programmes help raise awareness on the dangers of drug and substance abuse.
Teams from several youth clubs across the province are expected to take part in the competition, which coincides with National Youth Day commemorations. Organisers say the tournament will provide a platform for young athletes to showcase talent while promoting teamwork and healthy lifestyles.
Officials also noted that partnerships between community organisations and sponsors remain key to sustaining grassroots sport and expanding opportunities for young players in the province.
The MIDVA 1 tournament is expected to conclude on Sunday with finals and prize-giving ceremonies.
