Police in Midlands Province have arrested a 33-year-old man for allegedly murdering his brother-in-law in Chief Nhema area, Shurugwi.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the arrest of Last Bazangi of Chief Madyangove, Chivi, in connection with the death of 55-year-old Peter Chigamanye on September 8, 2025.

According to police, Bazangi had visited his sister, Patience Joka (37), who lived with her husband Chigamanye at Village Kodobo under Chief Nhema.

On the night of the incident, Joka retired to bed leaving the two men in the kitchen.

Inspector Mahoko said an altercation arose after Chigamanye complained that Bazangi had taken his cell phone and refused to return it.

“It is alleged that the suspect entered the couple’s bedroom armed with a hoe handle and struck the now-deceased several times on the head. The victim fell unconscious and was rushed to Shurugwi District Hospital, where he died on admission,” Mahoko said.

Bazangi fled the scene but was arrested the following day at a bus stop along the Zvishavane–Masvingo road after detectives tracked him down.

He is expected to appear in court soon to face murder charges.

Inspector Mahoko urged members of the public to resolve disputes peacefully and to respect the sanctity of life.
