Kwekwe to reconfigure its school development committees

Kwekwe City Council has announced plans to reconfigure Schools Development Committees (SDCs) at its primary schools, with Mayor Albert Zinhanga saying fresh elections will be conducted in line with existing regulations.

Zinhanga made the remarks in an interview with journalists shortly after a full council meeting, where councillors resolved to restructure the SDCs as part of broader reforms affecting council-run schools.

“We will notify residents of the dates and the laws governing the election of parents into the Schools Development Committees,” Zinhanga said. “We will notify the residents that as council we are going to Dambudzo Primary School for the election of SDC members.”

He said the process would be open and guided by the relevant statutory framework governing SDC elections.

“It’s going to be very open. No one will be barred as long as we are following the charter on when SDC elections are held,” he said.

Zinhanga said eligibility to stand for election into an SDC would be limited to parents or guardians with children currently enrolled at the respective school.

“To be considered for election, a parent should have a child attending at the school. We can verify this through the school registers,” he said.

The mayor said council would ensure transparency throughout the process and provide adequate notice to allow parents to participate.

The move to reconfigure SDCs follows council’s recent resolution to assume greater oversight of its schools, including financial and administrative functions.
