Kwekwe Mayor Councillor Albert Zinhanga says the city is stepping up efforts to improve its deteriorating road network and is exploring the establishment of a council-owned asphalt plant.
Speaking during an interview with this publication Cllr Zinhanga acknowledged that most roads in the city have been reduced to gravel, even in areas that were once tarred.
He said the council has been carrying out temporary works to keep vehicles moving, but a long-term solution is urgently needed.
> “We need to move beyond short-term fixes. With our own asphalt plant, we will be able to produce tar and ensure that roads are restored to a good condition,” he said.
Cllr Zinhanga added that the city has been engaging the Zimbabwe National Road Administration, ZINARA, and private players to mobilise support for the project.
He also revealed that council currently has three functional graders to carry out ongoing road rehabilitation works.
Road infrastructure remains one of the major service delivery challenges facing Kwekwe, with residents frequently raising concerns over poor road conditions in both high- and low-density suburbs.
