Kwekwe Mayor Cllr Albert Zinhanga led the distribution of food hampers to underprivileged residents using proceeds from this year’s Mayor’s Christmas Cheerfund, as the local authority intensified efforts to support vulnerable communities during the festive season.

Speaking at Mbizo Youth Centre, Cllr Zinhanga said the City of Kwekwe, working with the business community and individual well-wishers, had mobilised resources to ensure that disadvantaged residents received assistance ahead of Christmas.

“We pulled resources together with the business community and individuals to provide Christmas hampers and bring cheer to the underprivileged,” said the mayor.

Following the Mbizo event, Cllr Zinhanga also donated food hampers to Amaveni Old People’s Home and distributed additional hampers to needy residents in Amaveni suburb.

The Mayor’s Christmas Cheerfund is an annual initiative aimed at easing the burden faced by vulnerable groups, including the elderly and economically disadvantaged households, particularly during the festive period.

Some beneficiaries expressed appreciation for the donations, saying the assistance would make a meaningful difference to their lives.

“We are grateful to the council for the donation, which will make a difference to our lives this Christmas,” said one beneficiary.

Another said it was encouraging to see people extending care and support to the vulnerable members of society.

The City of Kwekwe said it would continue engaging stakeholders to mobilise resources for social welfare programmes targeting vulnerable communities across the city.
