Kwekwe Council warns against indiscriminate litter dumping

Kwekwe City Council has warned residents against dumping litter in undesignated areas, vowing to issue spot fines to offenders in a bid to keep the city clean.

Ward 7 Councillor Kudakwashe Gwamuri told journalists during a recent media briefing that the local authority is concerned by cases of residents disposing of rubbish shortly after refuse has been collected.

“We are concerned that residents start dumping rubbish in undesignated areas soon after refuse has been collected. As council we are going to be strict on offenders, who will be issued with spot fines,” Gwamuri said.

He urged residents to report anyone found littering so that the city can maintain a clean environment and control waste management costs.

“We must contain the cost of refuse collection so that residents do not pay high refuse collection levies. The refuse collection department is working tirelessly to keep Kwekwe clean,” he added.

Gwamuri reminded residents to follow the city’s refuse collection timetable and place their bins out only on designated collection days.

Kwekwe City Council has, in some instances, been forced to hire front-end loaders and lorries to clear garbage that accumulates in various suburbs due to illegal dumping.
