Kwekwe City Council has begun steps to implement a resolution by the previous council to confer the Freedom of the City status on President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Mayor Cllr Albert Zinhanga said the resolution was adopted by the 2018–2023 council but was not formally executed.
“The previous council had a resolution to grant the President the Freedom of the City status, but the function to formalise it was not held,” said Zinhanga in an interview following a full council meeting.
He said the current council is now following up on the decision to ensure it is implemented.
“As the new council, we are now taking steps to implement that resolution,” he said.
Zinhanga indicated that he became aware of the resolution after assuming office.
“I only became aware of the resolution later, and we are now working on ensuring that it is carried through,” he said.
The mayor said council has already initiated communication with relevant authorities.
“All correspondence was sent last week. The ministry and the President’s Office requested copies of the signed resolution, which we have since submitted,” he said.
He added that the local authority has begun preparatory work for the conferment ceremony, although a date has not yet been set.
“We have started preparations for the event but we are still awaiting further processes following acknowledgement of our communication,” said Zinhanga.
The Freedom of the City is a ceremonial honour bestowed by a local authority in recognition of distinguished service or contribution.
