Kwekwe council moves to curb land speculation

Kwekwe Mayor Cllr Albert Zinhanga says the local authority will no longer tolerate the purchase of land for speculative purposes, announcing that council has introduced a clause requiring beneficiaries to begin developing allocated stands within six months.

Zinhanga made the remarks during the tour of NDS 2-aligned Central Business District (CBD) developments in Kwekwe by the Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Owen Ncube.

He said the new condition had been incorporated into the agreement of sale to ensure that land allocated by council translates into tangible development rather than being held for resale or left idle.

“We are welcoming all investors who want to develop the City of Kwekwe but we do not want people who buy land and keep it for speculation,” Zinhanga said. “Those who acquire land must start developing it within six months. That is the only way we can build the Kwekwe that we want.”

The mayor said the city was experiencing visible growth, with new developments emerging across Kwekwe, adding that council’s focus was on orderly and sustainable urban expansion.

Zinhanga said the council leadership, management and councillors were working as a unified team to drive development and safeguard stability in the city.

“We are united as Team Kwekwe,” he said, adding that the local authority would not allow individuals with what he termed “frivolous agendas” to derail development efforts.

He expressed appreciation to investors and stakeholders supporting projects in the city, saying council remained committed to creating an enabling environment for development.

Zinhanga said the local authority was determined to improve infrastructure and facilities, with the goal of transforming Kwekwe into one of the leading cities in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region by 2030.

He said council would continue to engage residents and investors as it implements policies aimed at promoting development and responsible land use.
