Kwekwe Mayor Cllr Albert Zinhanga has expressed concern over the significant revenue loss the council is facing due to the vandalism of its water infrastructure.
This damage is reportedly caused by villagers from neighboring farms who are fetching water for their domestic animals.
Zinhanga was responding to concerns raised by councillors during a full council meeting, regarding the issue,.
He said there is need to enforce council bylaws to prevent villagers from bringing their domestic animals into the Central Business District.
“We need to activate the council bylaws to arrest those who bring their domestic animals into the CBD,” he said.
Ward 13 Cllr Alphonse Mugwagwa said residents in his ward are experiencing frequent interruptions in water supply which he ascribed to the ongoing vandalism of water infrastructure.
In addition to these challenges, Kwekwe City Council is struggling to cope with overflowing raw sewage in many suburbs, worsened by a severe shortage of manpower.
Ward 9 Cllr Maxwell Judha called for immediate action, urging the council to hire additional workers to effectively address sewer blockages.
