Kwekwe City Council has approved a new name for the council-owned Chana B Primary School, paving the way for its registration with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.

Kwekwe Mayor, Cllr Albert Zinhanga, confirmed the development following a full council meeting, stating that the school will now be known as Kushanduka Primary School.

“The name Chana B has been approved for change by council today. The school will now be called Kushanduka Primary School and that is the name that will be used for registration with the Ministry,” said Zinhanga.

He said the renaming marks an important step towards formalising the school’s status with the education authorities.

Zinhanga, however, indicated that he was not certain whether the registration process had already commenced.

“I am not sure whether the application for registration has been submitted but the approved name will be used in that process,” he said.

The mayor said the new name was a result of consultations carried out within the local community, although he was not directly involved in the engagements.

“There were consultations in the ward, but I did not attend the meetings, so I cannot fully explain how the name was chosen,” he said.

He noted that the name “Kushanduka,” which means “change,” could reflect the community’s aspirations.

“The name suggests transformation or a new beginning and it is likely that the community had its reasons for choosing it,” said Zinhanga.

Council officials say the renaming is expected to facilitate the school’s formal registration and integration into the national education system.
