Kwekwe begins road rehabilitation after rain damage

The City of Kwekwe has begun rehabilitating major roads damaged by recent heavy rains, with authorities reporting progress in restoring access on key routes.

Speaking after a full council meeting, Kwekwe Mayor Cllr Albert Zinhanga said the local authority had prioritised repairs on major roads and access routes into residential areas.

“Rehabilitation of all the major roads has started so that they become trafficable. Currently, the main highways and inroads to our locations are now passable,” Zinhanga said.

He said council teams have since shifted focus to internal roads within suburbs, which were also affected by the rains.

“We are now working on the rehabilitation of the inroads, and if we continue to have fine weather conditions, we expect significant improvements,” he said.

Zinhanga expressed optimism that continued favourable weather would accelerate the works, allowing the city to restore most roads within a short period.

“I believe we are going to have better days, and all the roads will be trafficable in the shortest space of time,” he said.

Recent rainfall across parts of the Midlands Province caused widespread damage to road infrastructure, leaving some routes difficult to navigate and affecting transport and service delivery.

Residents in some suburbs said while major roads had improved, smaller roads still require urgent attention, particularly in high-density areas.

The municipality has not provided a detailed timeline or budget for the rehabilitation programme but indicated that works would continue as weather conditions permit.
