Kwekwe Acting Mayor Councillor Kudakwashe Gwamuri has called on residents to show compassion and solidarity by supporting vulnerable members of the community during the festive season.
Speaking at the City of Kwekwe 2025 Christmas Lights Switch-on Ceremony last night, Cllr Gwamuri said the occasion was not only about lighting up the city but also about renewing hope and strengthening community bonds.
“We gather not just to switch on lights, but to ignite a spirit of hope and community,” he said. “Christmas reminds us that even in challenging times, light always overcomes darkness, and tonight these lights represent the strength and resilience of our city.”
The acting mayor said Kwekwe’s progress depended on unity among residents, leaders, workers, families, children and the elderly, urging them to uphold values of kindness, love and shared responsibility.
“As Kwekwe, we stand together, bound by a shared desire to build a better tomorrow,” he said. “Let these lights remind us of the kindness we show, the love we give and the responsibility we carry to uplift one another.”
Cllr Gwamuri specifically appealed to residents to remember those in need during the festive season, calling for practical support to vulnerable groups as the city celebrates Christmas.
“This festive season, let us remember the vulnerable, extend a hand to those in need and celebrate the progress we continue to make as a city,” he said.
He also urged residents to prioritise peace, unity and service, while cautioning against reckless behaviour during the holidays, noting that the festive period often comes with increased risks of accidents and crime.
“As we celebrate, we are also at risk due to accidents and crime, so let us remain vigilant and responsible,” he said.
The ceremony marked the official lighting of Christmas decorations across the central business district, an annual event aimed at fostering festive cheer. Cllr Gwamuri said the switch-on symbolised renewed hope for the city as residents head into the new year.
He wished residents a Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.
