The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) has re-elected George Maponga as its president for another five-year term, following a vote of confidence from members across the country.

Maponga, who has led the union for the past three years, pledged to continue strengthening the organisation and addressing challenges faced by the journalism industry.

“I want to assure them that I won’t let them down. I pledge to continue the work that we have been doing for the past three years, that is to rejuvenate, revive and renew the union so that it becomes the union of choice,” he said after the announcement of his re-election.

He said his top priority will be to push for the establishment of a National Employment Council (NEC) for journalists, which he noted would help improve working conditions for media practitioners.

“Going forward, we will make sure that government and employers finally heed our call on the need to constitute a National Employment Council,” he added.

The newly elected ZUJ national executive committee includes Vice President Mary Taruvinga, Secretary General Perfect Hlongwane, Treasurer Thabani Dube, Organising Secretary Emmanuel Kafe, and committee members Leopold Munhende and Sphathisiwe Mpofu.

Maponga expressed gratitude to union members, saying he was “more than happy” with the mandate given to him and his team.
