Club Corolla Zimbabwe has donated US$200 and an assortment of groceries to Rugare Old People’s Home in Amaveni Township, Kwekwe, as part of its ongoing community outreach initiatives.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, the home’s secretary and local businessman, Brighton Dube, expressed gratitude for the gesture, noting that the institution largely depends on donations and government grants channelled through the Department of Social Services.
“We submit returns to the Department of Social Services every month and they in turn deposit funds into our bank accounts. However, government takes time to respond. We last received payment in October 2024. The day-to-day running of the home comes from donations,” said Dube.
Club Corolla Zimbabwe President Peter Danziel Nyanhongo said the donation was made possible through contributions from members across the country.
He said the club, which started as a group of vintage car enthusiasts, has broadened its focus to include social responsibility programmes.
“This donation came from our members dotted around the country. We will continue to support Rugare Old People’s Home as per their request,” said Nyanhongo.
He added that the club, founded on 28 August 2020, was formed to promote the restoration and customization of vintage vehicles, but has since evolved to support charitable causes.
“We are interested in giving a facelift to our vehicles and doing general repairs as a hobby. We also assist members whenever they are in need and provide spare parts to struggling members. We decided to partner communities and lend support wherever possible,” he said.
Rugare Old People’s Home houses elderly residents from Kwekwe and surrounding areas, and relies heavily on well-wishers for its upkeep.
The latest donation is part of Club Corolla Zimbabwe’s commitment to complement government and community efforts in improving the welfare of vulnerable groups.
