Chimoio Volleyball Club triumphed over Sables VC in the men’s final, securing the championship at the two-day Mid Volleyball Association (MIDVA) tournament held at Zisco Club in Redcliff.

Sponsored by Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Planning David K. Mnangagwa, the tournament aimed to combat drug and substance abuse among youths in celebration of Youth Day.

A total of 20 teams participated, comprising eight ladies’ teams and 12 men’s teams.

Chimoio’s men’s team showcased their skill and determination, overcoming stiff competition to defeat Sables VC 3-1 in an electrifying final. Meanwhile, Chimoio’s ladies’ team finished as first runners-up, losing 3-0 to Strikers Volleyball Club of Harare.

Chimoio men’s head coach Chokuda Makuyana expressed pride in his team’s preparation.

“We had good preparations but we did not expect such tough competition from Sables in the final. We made some changes in the third set that nearly cost us but we put up a good fight and were mentally stronger than our opponents,” he stated.

Strikers’ coach, Sixpence, commended his team’s efforts despite facing challenges. “Despite a few hiccups coming off the off-season, the team delivered the desired results. We faced stiff competition from other teams,” he noted.

In reflecting on the final match, Chimoio ladies’ team head coach Innocent Moyo attributed their defeat to inexperience.

“This is a new team lacking exposure and this was their first tournament. Reaching the final was a bonus against an experienced side. Our setbacks were on service during attacks,” he explained.

In the men’s category, Correctionals secured third place by defeating Vikers 2-0, while Cobras edged Vipers 2-1 to claim third place in the women’s category.

Both champions, Chimoio and Strikers, received USD 500, a ball, a set of uniforms, gold medals and a trophy.

First runners-up Sables and Chimoio earned USD 300 each, a ball, a trophy and silver medals, while third-placed teams Correctionals and Cobras were awarded USD 200 each, a trophy and bronze medals.

The tournament recognized individual excellence, with 12 players receiving awards for their outstanding performances. Chimoio’s head coach was named Coach of the Tournament, while Strikers’ coach Sixpence received the women’s Coach of the Tourney award.

SRC Provincial Coordinator Simon Masaka praised the tournament’s impact, emphasizing its potential to identify talent for national teams.

“These teams from local townships showcased top-notch volleyball for two days. We are committed to collaborating with the corporate sector to support sports development. This tournament aligns well with our efforts to combat drug and substance abuse by keeping youths active in sports. We appreciate the sponsorship provided for this event,” he said.
