Former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa has called on local authorities to prioritise service delivery and promote local economic development despite prevailing economic challenges.
Chamisa made the remarks in a condolence message delivered on his behalf by former Gweru South Member of Parliament Amos Chibaya during the burial of social justice advocate Tendai Ruben Mbofana’s mother, Anastasia Takazvida Mbofana, at Redcliff Cemetery.
He acknowledged the economic hardships facing local authorities but urged them to remain committed to their mandate.
“Residents and local authorities must have a harmonious relationship. We are aware of the economic challenges facing the country. At one time, Redcliff depended on operations at Ziscosteel. Despite this setback, the council must ensure good service delivery as well as promoting local economic development,” Chamisa said.
He noted that the closure of Ziscosteel had negatively affected Redcliff’s economic fortunes but emphasized that councils should not neglect essential services such as water provision, waste management and road maintenance.
Mbofana, a well-known social justice advocate, has been active in promoting accountability and civic engagement within local governance structures. The burial was attended by family, friends, civic leaders, and members of the opposition.
