Black Rhinos Volleyball Club emerged overall champions at the Breast Cancer Awareness Volleyball Tournament held at Zisco Club in Redcliff recently, dominating both the men’s and women’s categories.
The annual tournament, hosted by Diamonds Ladies Volleyball Club, attracted top volleyball teams from across the country in both open and beach volleyball competitions.
The event combined competitive sport with a strong social message, aiming to raise awareness about breast cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Black Rhinos proved unstoppable in most divisions, claiming gold in both men’s and women’s indoor categories.
The team’s only defeat came in the women’s beach volleyball category, where they were edged out by Black Mambas. Rhinos dedicated their victories to supporting the fight against breast cancer.
“This tournament means more than just winning. We dedicate our participation and success to all those affected by breast cancer and to raising awareness about early detection and support,” said a Black Rhinos representative.
Midlands Volleyball Association Chairperson, Rudo Charuma, commended the organisers for using sport to advance a health cause.
“We are proud to host this annual tournament and to use our platform to raise awareness about breast cancer,” Charuma said. “We hope that the event not only provides an enjoyable experience for all those involved but also inspires others to take action against breast cancer.”
The third edition of the tournament featured nine men’s teams, six women’s teams, seven women’s beach volleyball teams and four men’s beach volleyball teams. The games drew large crowds of spectators who cheered teams on throughout the weekend.
In the men’s division, Chimoio took second place behind Black Rhinos, while Correctional settled for third. In the women’s category, Vipers and Diamonds secured silver and bronze respectively.
In beach volleyball, Black Mambas topped the men’s standings, followed by two Black Rhinos teams. In the women’s beach category, three Rhinos teams dominated the podium.
The event received support from sponsors including Old Mutual, Doves, Moonlight and the Municipality of Redcliff, among others.
Organisers said the success of the tournament reflects the power of community-driven initiatives in promoting both sport and public health awareness.
With its growing popularity and positive social impact, the Diamonds Ladies Volleyball Club hopes to make next year’s edition even bigger — continuing to combine the spirit of competition with the fight against breast cancer.
