Kwekwe mayor Cllr Albert Zinhanga has donated clothing, baby wrappers, soap, diapers and other essential items to two mothers who gave birth to triplets at Kwekwe General Hospital this week.
The donation from the mayor’s office is aimed at easing the financial burden on the families as they prepare to care for the six newborns.
Speaking during the handover of the items, Cllr Zinhanga said the gesture was intended to support the mothers as they adjusted to the demands of raising three babies each.
“This gesture is part of our efforts to support the mothers as they adjust to the demands of caring for three newborns each,” he said.
Kwekwe General Hospital medical superintendent Dr Tinashe Gunda welcomed the donation, saying it would go a long way in assisting the families, who were facing financial challenges.
Dr Gunda revealed that the parents of one set of triplets had not known they were expecting three babies because they could not afford antenatal care and an ultrasound scan.
“I was discussing with one of the couples after the delivery. The triplets were actually not diagnosed. They didn’t know that there were three babies inside. They were so poor that they couldn’t even afford to go to antenatal clinic or afford to do an ultrasound scan,” he said.
He said the donation was particularly important because the families and their extended relatives were struggling to provide for the newborns.
Dr Gunda thanked the mayor for supporting the hospital and the families, saying the institution depended on assistance from stakeholders to serve the community effectively.
He also welcomed Cllr Zinhanga’s commitment to maintaining contact with the hospital and providing further support.
