Redcliff says US$18 million Zisco debt hampers service delivery

The Municipality of Redcliff says its ability to deliver services continues to be affected by an outstanding debt of approximately US$18 million owed by the Zimbabwe Iron and Steel Company (Ziscosteel).

Speaking to journalists after a full council meeting, Finance Director Lindiwe Hwata said the debt accounts for the bulk of the municipality’s outstanding receivables and has remained unpaid despite ongoing engagement with the company.

“Our total debtors stand at around US$24 million, with US$18 million being owed by Zisco,” Hwata said.

“There has been no movement in terms of Zisco paying us, and we are continuing to engage them. That is where we are having some challenges because they contribute most of the revenue due to council.”

Hwata said the failure to recover the outstanding amount has weakened the municipality’s financial performance and constrained its ability to provide essential services.

She said the municipality is owed approximately US$24 million in total by debtors while it owes about US$6 million to its own creditors.
