The Municipality of Redcliff has engaged several companies operating within the town to help strengthen refuse collection as it works to address mounting waste management challenges.
Director of Housing and Community Services Admire Chigayo told journalists after a full council meeting that the local authority had partnered with companies including Steelmakers, Parkstar and Shesham to improve refuse collection.
“We have engaged some partners that operate within the municipality, some companies, the likes of Steelmakers, Parkstar, Shesham, so as to assist us with this refuse collection challenge,” Chigayo said.
He said the municipality was also deploying its own equipment to improve service delivery.
“We also utilise our own equipment. Recently, we serviced one of our tractors, so it will aid the already existing compactor with regards to refuse collection,” he said.
The comments came after mayor Cllr Vincent Masiiwa expressed concern over uncollected refuse at shopping centres across the town during the full council meeting.
“What are we doing about refuse collection? I went around the town and saw heaps of garbage at shopping centres. For over three weeks, the situation has been like this. What is our role as council then?” Masiiwa said.
“We end up saying residents complain too much when we are not carrying out our mandate. The situation is untenable. Let’s have time frames for refuse collection.”
