Let the games begin

Football, the world’s most followed sport, is set to burst into life as 48 nations prepare to compete at the global showpiece.
The tournament will feature 12 groups of four teams, an increase from the 32-team format used at previous editions. The competition will be co-hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico.
The tournament kicks off on June 11, but unfortunately the Zimbabwe Warriors will not be among the teams battling for glory on football’s biggest stage.
The top two teams from each group will progress to the round of 32, alongside the eight best third-placed teams.
A total of 1 248 players are expected to take part, while Africa will be represented by officials in various roles, including referees, assistant referees and match commissioners.
This is a positive development for the continent and reflects the growth of football across Africa.
However, Zimbabwe will not be represented either as a participating nation or among the tournament officials, which will disappoint many local football followers.
Despite this, the absence of the Warriors is unlikely to take away from what promises to be an exciting global football spectacle.
Fans around the world can expect an entertaining tournament, with a new generation of young players expected to attract attention.
Young talents such as Spain’s Lamine Yamal, Argentina’s Nico Paz, France’s Désiré Doué, Brazil’s Rayan, Mexico’s Gilberto Mora, Côte d’Ivoire’s Yan Diomande, England’s Nico O’Reilly, Croatia’s Luka Vušković and Senegal’s Ibrahim Mbaye are among the youngsters expected to make an impact.
At the same time, established stars including Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Erling Haaland and Ousmane Dembélé will be looking to leave their mark on the tournament.
Beyond the competition itself, major tournaments provide lessons for developing football nations.
Zimbabwe’s football administrators, coaches, players and supporters can draw valuable lessons from the organisation, standards and competitiveness on display.
There will be excitement, surprises and unforgettable moments as nations compete for the ultimate prize.
Football lovers should sit back, relax and enjoy the game.
