Kwekwe urged to prioritise locals in residential stand allocations

A resident of Amaveni has called on the City of Kwekwe to prioritise local youths when allocating residential stands in areas surrounding the suburb.

Speaking during a ZANU-PF feedback meeting, Annie Madhochi said some stands were being allocated to people from outside the city, leaving local young people at a disadvantage.

She told the meeting that prospective homeowners from places such as Bulawayo and Harare were receiving allocations ahead of residents from Amaveni, raising concerns about access to housing opportunities for locals.

Madhochi questioned whether measures could be put in place to ensure youths from the area benefit from available stands.

Responding to the concerns, Ward 8 Cllr Edumakomborero Mlambo urged residents seeking land to register on the council’s housing waiting list and to follow up on their applications.

He said a directive from the government requires local authorities to service land before allocating residential stands.

Mlambo added that residents with lodgers’ cards should continue engaging council to regularise their housing status, in line with the current policy framework.
