Zimbabwe and Mountaineers batsman Nick Welch has been fined US$100 following an emotional outburst that resulted in damage to a dressing room door at Kwekwe Sports Club during a four-day match.
The incident occurred on day two of the fixture on Wednesday, 4 February 2026, after Welch was adjudged leg-before-wicket (lbw). Visibly frustrated by the decision, the national team batsman left the field and reportedly slammed the away team dressing room door, causing damage.
Witnesses said a loud bang echoed around the pavilion area as teammates, match officials and spectators looked on.
On day three of the match, Welch appeared before the match referee as disciplinary proceedings were instituted. He was heard expressing remorse during the hearing.
“I’m in trouble for slamming a door, which was not intentional. This could affect my career,” he said.
Despite his explanation, the venue manager ruled that Welch’s conduct breached Zimbabwe Cricket’s code of conduct. He was subsequently fined and ordered to pay for the replacement of the damaged door.
Cricket officials said while emotions can run high, particularly in the longer format of the game, players are expected to maintain professionalism at all times, especially at official venues.
