The Ministry of Health and Child Care will begin rolling out a six-month HIV and AIDS prevention injection in Kwekwe District starting next week, Zibagwe Rural District Council (ZRDC) Chief Executive Officer Farai Machaya has said.

Machaya revealed this during a full council meeting, where he presented the council’s first quarter programmes and priorities for 2026. He said Kwekwe District had been selected as one of the first districts in the country to implement the new HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) injection programme.

“The Minister of Health and Child Care will be rolling out the six-month HIV and AIDS prevention injection beginning next week. Kwekwe District has been chosen countrywide to be one of the first districts for this programme,” Machaya told councillors.

He said the injectable HIV prevention medicine is targeted at HIV-negative adults weighing at least 35 kilogrammes who are considered to be at high risk of contracting the virus. Machaya added that clinical trials for the injection were conducted in South Africa and Uganda, and the ministry has assured the public that the medication is safe and effective.
