Kwekwe Mayor, Councillor Albert Zinhanga, on Christmas Day donated clothing and diapers to the first five of the seven babies born at Kwekwe General Hospital as part of this year’s Mayor’s Christmas Cheerfund.
Speaking during the handover at the hospital, Cllr Zinhanga said the city was pleased to welcome an increased number of Christmas Day births compared to previous years. He said the fund was able to support only the first five babies delivered on the day.
“We have brought five gift hampers for the first five babies. We thank their mothers for bringing into the world the Christmas babies,” said Cllr Zinhanga. “As the City of Kwekwe, we are proud to receive the newly born and we appeal to their mothers to take good care of them.”
The hospital’s sister-in-charge, Mary Hita, said most of the babies born on Christmas Day were girls, whom she said would play an important role in population growth in the future.
She appealed to the City of Kwekwe to continue with the initiative of supporting babies born on Christmas Day, noting that seven babies were delivered this year. Some of the mothers, she said, came from neighbouring Zhombe, while one baby was delivered on the way to the hospital.
The donation forms part of the city’s annual festive season initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable groups and commemorating significant community milestones.
