Kwekwe City Netball Team emerged champions in the Open Netball category at the 2025 Kwekwe Mayor’s Challenge Cup, held recently at Mbizo Stadium.
The second edition of the tournament brought together schools and clubs from across Kwekwe and surrounding districts, with teams competing in various sporting disciplines including netball, soccer, volleyball, basketball, and handball.
Kwekwe City displayed dominance and determination throughout the netball competition, overcoming fierce rivals Kwekwe Queens and Midlands State University (MSU) Queens, who finished second and third respectively.
Speaking after the final, organisers hailed the tournament’s success in promoting grassroots sport and fostering community unity.
“The Mayor’s Challenge Cup continues to grow each year, giving local athletes a platform to showcase their talent while strengthening community ties,” said one of the event organisers.
The tournament, which featured three main age categories — Under-14, Under-18, and Open — saw exciting contests across the sporting disciplines, with schools, clubs, and institutions battling for top honours.
In netball, Manunure High School claimed the Under-18 Girls title, followed by Kwekwe High School and Mbizo High School.
Across other sports, Ngezi Barracks High School were crowned Under-18 Boys Soccer champions, dethroning Mbizo High, while King Lions won the Open Men’s Soccer category.
The handball courts saw Fatima High School and Hawks Club dominate the Under-18 Girls and Boys divisions respectively, while Black Rhinos Club clinched gold in the Open Men’s category.
On the basketball side, Kwekwe High School took the Under-18 Girls title, and Rio Tinto High School emerged victorious in the Under-18 Boys competition.
Volleyball action also thrilled spectators, with Manunure High School and Mbizo Barracks High claiming the top spots in the Under-18 Girls and Boys categories respectively.
The Mayor’s Challenge Cup — initiated to promote sport and talent development in Kwekwe — has quickly become a key fixture on the local sporting calendar, uniting schools, clubs, and fans in a vibrant display of athleticism and community spirit.
Organisers expressed gratitude to all participating teams and sponsors, pledging to make next year’s edition even bigger and better.
