Ward 12 Councillor Thomas Mahapa has donated sporting equipment to three community teams in his ward as part of efforts to empower young people and curb drug and substance abuse.
The beneficiaries include a newly formed netball team, the Ward 12 Community Netball Queens, a volleyball team still to be named, and Rangers FC, a social soccer team that plays in local league matches.
Speaking at the handover ceremony on Saturday, Cllr Mahapa said sport provides an important platform for youth development, particularly for those who may not excel academically.
“Not everyone is good in academics,” he said. “I decided to promote sport in my ward so that young people can earn a living and build their futures through their talents. This will help reduce drug and substance abuse, as the youths will stay busy, and parents can keep track of their children’s behaviour at the sports fields.”
The donation included balls for soccer, volleyball and netball. Cllr Mahapa also pledged ongoing support for the teams, covering refreshments and transport during training sessions and matches.
Ward 12 Community Netball Queens coach Rumbidzai Shava welcomed the gesture, saying the equipment would boost the team’s preparations.
“We are elated to receive this ball, which will go a long way in helping us train and play. We now hope for uniforms so we can represent our ward well. Netball keeps us focused, fit, and away from gossiping or loitering,” she said.
Team captain Kudzai Mapokotera said the sport has helped young women resist negative influences.
“Sport helps us avoid peer pressure, drugs, and even early pregnancies. We thank the councillor for thinking of us,” she said.
Rangers FC coach Shepherd Mundete also praised Cllr Mahapa’s consistent backing of local sports.
“Cllr Mahapa always comes through for us, be it transport, refreshments, or equipment. We are grateful for the ball donation and his constant encouragement,” said Mundete.
The initiative is part of broader grassroots efforts across Kwekwe to use sport as a tool for youth empowerment, social inclusion and health promotion.
