The Masvingo Athletics Board Governor, Irene Masiiwa Chineka, has underscored the need to establish more athletics clubs across the country to strengthen the development of the sport beyond schools.
Chineka, who facilitated the World Athletics Technical Officials Education and Certification System (TOECS) Course held at Kwekwe Primary School from the 25 – 27 August 2025, said relying only on school competitions limits the growth of athletics.
She said having active clubs would create opportunities for participation at different levels, while also ensuring continuity for athletes after completing school.
Chineka also emphasized the importance of professional officiating, noting that proper enforcement of rules builds trust and appreciation of athletics among the public.
The TOECS course, which drew 47 participants from Midlands, Manicaland, Mashonaland East and Mashonaland Central is an international officiating qualification open to holders of the National Officiating Course, commonly known as the Red Card.
Chineka said participants showed great enthusiasm, particularly during the practical sessions, and expressed hope that the training will help raise officiating standards in Zimbabwe.
