PAZ raises alarm over drivers drinking in bus termini

The Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) has expressed concern over the growing trend of public transport drivers buying and consuming alcohol at bus termini in central business districts.

PAZ National Coordinator, Tafadzwa Goliati, said the situation was putting passengers’ lives at risk as some drivers were disguising beer as energy drinks, while illegal drug sales were also taking place at some ranks.

“Bus ranks have become de facto drinking spots for drivers. We appeal to the Zimbabwe Republic Police to crack down on the illegal vending of beer in these areas,” Goliati said.

He added that the availability of bottle stores near transport hubs was worsening the problem. “Although we complained about this to the Liquor Board, no action has been taken to stop granting liquor licenses to establishments close to bus ranks. This measure can help restore order and reduce accidents,” he said.

PAZ has urged authorities to take urgent action, warning that the unchecked consumption of alcohol and drugs by transport crews could lead to preventable road accidents.
