The Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Owen Ncube has reiterated government’s commitment to improving livelihoods through job creation and enhanced service delivery within a five-kilometre radius of communities.
His remarks were delivered on his behalf by the Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Dr Edgas Seenza, during a tour of the new Globe and Phoenix Primary School in Kwekwe by Special Advisor to the President on Monitoring and Implementation of Government Programmes and Projects, Jorum Gumbo.
Ncube said the construction of the new school, which is now at 80 percent completion and expected to be finished by September 2025, was part of the Second Republic’s thrust to modernise infrastructure and improve access to quality education. The school is set to cater for 785 pupils.
“The construction of Globe and Phoenix Primary School resonates with the government’s commitment to infrastructural development in pursuit of quality education and dovetails with the national vision of attaining an empowered upper-middle-income society earlier than 2030,” said Ncube.
He noted that the decommissioning of the old school had disrupted learning, with pupils temporarily relocated to Russell Primary School. The new facilities, which include seven two-classroom blocks, an administration block and ablution facilities, are now at roofing stage.
The project, Ncube added, has created 50 jobs and reflects the government’s development mantra of providing local solutions to local challenges.
“These efforts are in line with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s vision to transform the livelihoods of communities through job creation and ensuring essential services such as education and health are accessible within five kilometres,” he said.
He commended the collaboration of stakeholders, including the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Kwekwe City Council, schools, community organisations and private players, in mobilising resources for the project.
The Minister also highlighted other infrastructure developments in Kwekwe under the Second Republic, among them the private-sector led Chawanda Stadium, Zhongxin International Hotel, and the resurfacing of the 40-kilometre Kwekwe-Zhombe Road.
“These projects demonstrate unity of purpose and underscore our collective responsibility to build a prosperous and empowered society,” Ncube said.
